This quaint village of fairy tale cottages, hidden courtyards and award winning gardens is home to an endless variety of specialty shops, boutiques, and over 70 art and photography galleries. At the edge of the village is the world famous Carmel Beach with its white sand and sculptured cypress groves. A short distance from the village is the historic Carmel Mission built in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra. It is one of two Basilicas located on the West Coast and is also Serra's burial site. Carmel offers a bounty of international and regional restaurants that will satisfy the most discriminating palettes. Within its forested setting are an abundance of charming hotels and inns.
Carmel is located 2 miles south of Monterey and 28 miles north of Big Sur off Highway 1.
