Como Lake e fantastico

by venteeocho - last update: Nov 3, 2005

The traditional itineraries of those great European trips in direction towards the italianpeninsula have always stopped, through the alpine directrices, in Lombardy and, more precisely, in the region of the lakes. In particular, our territory has ofter been an obligated place where to stop, as it has always been exalted not only by very well-known literates in their memorable pages, but it has also been chsen as a desired destination for pleasant stays of famous people, artist, politicians like for example Winston Churchill and Konrad Adenauer. Many are the reasons for the interest and the recall for Lake Como: the incomparable beauty of the landscape, so varied in its sceneries and colours; the presence of evocative corners along the lacke coast, the richness of the historical and artistic patrimony starting from the famous villad that can better be seen and admired from a boat.
rom any direction one can reach Como, the first element that is immediately noticed, also from a certain distance, is the Baradello Castle wich dominates over Como and over the amphitheatre of the lake. The Baradello Tower The "Sentinel made of stone". Near the Tower we can find teh Basilica of San Carpoforo; remarkable are the apsides and the bell-tower.
The history of Como is very rich of episodes and many are the proofs of a very illustriuos past as far as the archaeologic, architectural, religious and civil aspects are concerned.
Among those personages who made the city become famous, we can find names such as
Caio Plinio, a naturalist and a scientist who was the author of the famous "Naturalis Historia", Plinio "the young", a politician and a literate, Paolo Giovio, a historian and bishop of Nocera, Pope Innocenzo XI and Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery. Inventiveness and initiative have always been the innate endowment of the people living in Como. In the archtectural field we must not forget that from our lake and from the nearby areas used to come the Maestri Comacini, that starting from the Medieval period, they used to be builders both in Italy and abroad. The construction of the majestic Cathedral, that has been built thanks to the genius of the Maestri Comacini, was beguin in 1396 and continued for many centuries thanks to the work of many sculptors and artistsand it was finally completed in 1744; the front part, in particular constitutes a real jewel of the Gothic-Renaissance. Nerx to the Broletto, the old place where once was the city Hall, built in 1215 in a Romanic-Gothic style.
