Earth appears to be one of the most popular destinations on VT, so I thought while I was down in Hereford for the holidays, I'd take the 40 minute drive south and snap a couple of pictures so y'all could see what the fuss is all about. Earth, Texas - the real Earth, TX… is located at the junction of US70 and Farm Road 1055 (that runs all the way up to Hereford). The trip across the Caprock on US70 is a gorgeous drive, but that’s another story in itself and best left to a springtime photo-taking trip. :-) The town of Earth was formed in 1924 and there are several versions of how it got its name. Of course the boring version is probably the correct one in that they wanted to call it “Good Earth” (cotton farming is prevalent in that part of the Panhandle) and the name was shortened by the Post Office. (I wonder if that’s how Post, Texas got its name? <g>) My favorite version is that a major dust storm was blowing when the town’s 1st postmaster (CH Reeves) had to come up with a name. If you ever get caught in the Panhandle when the wind gets going, the high wires start howling, and the sky turns brown you’ll know why that version hits home for me. The population is small enough (~1300) that they have to run a consolidated school district with nearby Springlake, but the lack of size doesn’t diminish their Wolverine Pride. Like most rural Texas towns after football season, you’ll see murals and banners for the local football team all over town, but lest ye forget that education is the primary goal of a school system, maybe the Springlake-Earth ISD web site will remind you :-) Another link that I hope lasts a while is for Bob Borum – it’s a very full and humorous glimpse of growing up 100 miles past Nowhere. |
