In the south of Breda you'll find the former village "Ginneken". It dates back from at least 1246, when it was even bigger than Breda. It started as a rural area, but developed into an industrial area with textile and beer. At the start of the 20th century the industry had gone and "Ginneken" became a tourist place.
After a 70-year struggle, "Ginneken" was annexed to Breda on January 1st 1942. It may be completely integrated into Breda, but still it has its own character.

Breda officialy became a city in 1252, which makes it one of the oldest cities in the south of the Netherlands.
