Paul2001's Beijing Page

Of all the major cities in the world that I have visited, I think that none left with such a feeling of ambivelance as Beijing. I did not leave Beijing with any regret or longing to return. However this does not mean that I had a horrible time here too. In fact Beijing and its surrounding are so full major attractions and monuments that I found that I needed to spend a couple of days more here to see everything. My problem with Beijing was that as a city it has many serious flaws. It is a city that is developing by with regards to modernization, way too fast. Everywhere you go, a new office tower or shopping mall is going up. The victim of all of this progress is Beijing's past and it's character. You can see a glass office tower anywhere in the world but palaces, hutongs, markets and temples that you find here, should define Beijing. Instead that are being bulldozed down for the sake of development. For this reason, I felt that Beijing was a city without any heart. It sold it's soul for the all mighty dollar. Still Beijing is a must-see destination simply for the fact that it is the city that best provides you some insight into China itself. Not just the political capital, it is also China's cultural capital. It is here that you wil bestl experience China's historical legacy and economc future.

China has always seemed fascinating, Paul - your page has confirmed it. You also have confirmed other stories I'd heard about how frustrating it can be! Still, I'd love to get there...

Interesting tips and insights! At the ZKM Modern Art Museum in Karlsruhe there is now a huge exhibition of works by contemporary artists reflecting their experience of the current rapid expansion of Chinese cities. Fascinating!

I've always been fascinated by Beijing, especially the Forbidden Palace. Hopefully I'll get to go there someday.
