Paul2001's trip to Morocco

by Paul2001 - last update: Apr 11, 2005

Unfortunately I cannot give you a fair picture of Morocco as about a week into the trip I got really sick.
This is not to say that I had an altogether bad time in this intriguing country but it did somewhat spoil by attempts to hike in the Atlas Mountians and to visit the Kasbahs that sit on the edge of the these glorious mountains. Still I strongly recommed going if only to visit the fascinating cities of Fez and Marrakesh which will provide you possibly the best glimpse of the urban Arab world.

Morocco in the Movies

Interesting aspect to Morocco is that once you are there, you think that you have seen it before. Well there is a logic to this perception. It seems that virtually every Hollywood movie that is suppose to take place somewhere in the Islamic World or some other exotic place was actually filmed in Morocco. I find this intriguing especially after recently watching the film "Black Hawk Down" and recongnizing the architecture as being Moroccian in character. It was in fact filmed the Rabat/Sale region. If you also are fascinated by this interesting movie trivia than you can read my list of films that were actually filmed in Morocco.

1) The Sheltering Sky
2) Black Hawk Down
3) The Man Who Would Be King
4) The Jewel of the Nile
5) Lawrence of Arabia
6) Seven Years in Tibet
7) Gladiator
8) The Four Feathers (2002)
9) The Last Testament
10) Alexander the Great (2004)
11) Sahara (2005)

Interesting to note that two films that I know of that actually take place in Morocco where filmed elsewhere: "Casablanca" was
filmed in Hollywood. "The Wind and the Lion" was filmed in Spain.

Pros:"Great Atmosphere. Very pleasant people."
Cons:"Boring food and nightlife. Very stubborn touts."
In A Nutshell:"A great introduction to the Arab World"
