Egypt by Taxi

If you want to get out of the cities like Luxor or Aswan and tour Egypt on your own, then you are pretty well limited to taking a taxi. Taxis of course are everywhere in Egypt, waiting to ambush any tourist that they can find. Usually outside of your hotel, you will have to run a gauntlet of taxi drivers attempting to get to take a tour to a nearby attraction like the Pyramids or Philae. I actually did take a taxi to this later location and was so impressed by friendliness of the driver that I hired him to take me on another tour to Kom Ombo and Edfu as well as to the airport in Aswan.
Taxi drivers expect you to haggle for the price of a ride however if you are staying at a hotel nearby, you need not bother. Most hotels will post a price for taxi tours at their reception desk. This probably the best way to arrange a taxi tour.

A Felucca Ride on the Nile

Feluccas are a leisurely way to travel about on the Nile. I took a felucca on the Nile at Aswan and found it to be a rather pleasant experience. You can use a felucca to ride around Elephanta Island or you can like I did, use one to cross the Nile and visit the sights on the West bank of the river. Remember to haggle the cost with the felucca pilot.
