"Interlaken and the Bernese Alps" Interlaken by Paul2001

When I visited the Bernese Alps I based myself in Interlaken. I stayed here for 4 days and I found this to be my favourite region in Switzerland. The mountain scenery here is very impressive. Furthermore, unlike Zermatt, the region has some other more cultural and historical attractions such as some very fine castles and outdoor museums.
Interlaken itself is a pleasant town that is totally based on the tourist industry. There are plenty of hotels and I understand it rarely books up. There is also a wide range of restaurants and bars to keep you busy after you taken in the mountains.
An interesting curiosity here is how many tourists come here from India. Apparently this is do to the fact that many of the mountain scenery scenes that are so common in Bollywood movies were shot here (something that I noticed in one Bollywood feature that I saw while in India). Hence those who can afford it come here to visit all those wonderful places they saw in these movies. An interesting byproduct of this phenomena is that Interlaken is now full of very good Indian restaurants.
