One of Greece's Premiere Byzantine Attractions

Church of Our Lady Hodegetria
Mistras is wonderful historical sight just outside of Sparta. Mistras is sort of a Byzantine ghost town that works its way up a large hill. The hill is crowned by a castle from which there are stupendous views of the nearby mountains and valleys. The churches are both beautiful and interesting. The site takes a good four hours to visit and you should wear walking shoes because of the steep trails. Although Mistras is well on the bus tour circuit, I found that the site is so large that you do not feel overwhelmed by other tourists.

Pros:"Well preserved "ruins". Lots of tourists but not crowded."
Cons:"Lots of tough walking will be difficult for some."
In A Nutshell:"One of my favourite experiences in Greece"

34 years in my case since I was at Mistras - it enchanted me then and set me off on a study of Byzantine history that continues to this day. I would love to go back sometime. It was a real pleasure to take your virtual tour here. leyle
