  • There is only one museum in the Yukon that you definitely should see and that is Whitehorse's the MacBride Museum. This is basically a regional museum that gives you great insight into life in the Yukon both before and after the arrival of Europeans. The museum has decent displays on the local aboriginal peoples, indeginous wildlife and on pioneer times. Of course there are also exhibits on the the Klondike goldrush days. There is also a train engine when trains traveled to these parts earlier in the 20th century. All in all the museum allows you to get a feel of the atmosphere of the Yukon.
The museum is located at 1124 First Avenue

Things To Do: Take a tour of the S.S. Klondike

  • While in Whitehorse take a tour of the S.S. Klondike. This paddlewheeled steamer used to travel along the mighty Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson city back in the 1930's up until 1955.
It was accidently beached in 1960 where it sits today on the western bank of the Yukon River. Today the steamer looks rather pathetic sitting on the bank but it has been beautifully restored. The 25 minute tour of the boat is well worth the time as the guided tour by Parks Canada is excellent. Because of the fine restoration work the tour captures the atmosphere of the time when the Yukon was the last frontier and steemers like the S.S. Klondike where the only means of traveling up and down the territory.

Things To Do: The Discovery Claim and Bonanza Creek

  • Yukon Territory - Dredge No. 4, Near Dawson City

  • It was on Bonanza Creek, near Dawson, that gold was discovered back in 1896. The event began the Klondike Stampede that flooded the Dawson region with prospectors throughout the late 1890's. Today the area is a National Historic Park run by the Canadian Government. Other than scenery there is actually little to see except for this huge and fascinating dredge which sits on Bonanza Creek. Dredges like this one were used by the miners when it became very difficult to find gold by simple panning. This dredge could lift up large hunks of rock and dirt to be sifted through. The dredge, formally called Dredge No. 4, can be visited inside and out by tour for $5.00 CDN.

Things To Do: The Dawson City Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yukon Territory - Dawson City Museum
  • Dawson City Museum

  • The Dawson City Museum is one of the two museums in the Yukon(the other the McBride Museum in Whitehorse) that should be visited. The museum is within a elegent building built in 1901. It is full of very good exhibits on the natural history of the region, the cultural history of the native peoples and off course the Klondike days. There are costumed guides that will answer you any questions that you might have. They also offer tours of the museum. There are also steam engines outside that were used to transport gold from the gold fields into Dawson. On a whole I loved this museum. It is not that large and should take you about hour to tour.
Admission to the museum is $5.00. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm daily but only in the tourist season. For the rest of the year it is closed.

Such great (RECENT) memories, visiting your page!! 2 things: I got there BEFORE the mosquitoes (late may), at least in Dawson/Whitehorse... Also, the Dawson ferry is FREE & very regular (never had to wait 1/2 an hour...) But it's also LOUD, esp. at night!
