  • Favorite Thing: Let's get this straight before you arrive to Niagara Falls. No tourist attraction that I have ever visited across the entire globe has been so exploited by the tourist trade as Niagara Falls. There more grotesque tourist attractions taking the advantage of the Falls here than you possibly imagine or you would want to see. This includes every imaginably themed wax museum you can think of to every food chain restaurant there is.
The sad thing about all of this is that it almost takes away from the centrepiece attraction that drew you here in the first place. That is the Falls themselves which are quite simply awe inspiring.

Fondest Memory: So powerful are the Niagara Falls that for a few moments you forget about all the grisly tourist attractions that surround them. Most people visit the Falls as a daytrip from Toronto or Buffalo across the border. This is shame because there is more to see in region of Niagara Fall beyond the silly stuff near the Falls. This includes several interesting colonial forts that were the sights of War of 1812 battles, the fine colonial town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the interesting wineries regions.

General Tips: Go fishing on the Lake of the Woods

  • Favorite Thing: The Lake of the Woods which sits on the Minnesota and Ontario border at the extreme westend, is suppose to be the best place to fish for walleye or pickrel in the world(Field and Stream says so). Whether it is or is not, the place is very beautiful (however my picture is not) and could be visited for the scenery alone. This is especially so when I visit when I visited which was in the September of 1988 when the colour of the leaves were changing to gold orange and red. It was a great reminder to what a beautiful country Canada can be.

We went to Niagara Falls for our Honeymoon in 1964 - now I want to go back to visit Fort Erie. I have discovered my g-g-g-grandfather was in the Battle of Lundy's Lane during the War of 1812. Good tips - thanx.

Interesting new tips (new to me, anyway) on Fort Mississauga and ice-fishing. I don't really blame the fish for not biting at -20C. I don't think I would, either, LOL. We went to Old Fort Erie with our then-small children in 1981.

I really enjoyed the places I visited in Ontario a few years back. I especially agree with you about the tacky "attractions" at Niagara Falls.

It's been 2 yrs. since I visited & it is indeed a joy to read your fine, well crafted pages. Your enthusiasm, honesty, attention to detail, and terriric insights add up to excellence. Loved the history, architecture, and nature in one beautiful location.
