"Paul2001's Fascination with Washington" Washington D.C. by Paul2001

I have visited three times in my life and upon each occasion I have been utterly fascinated with the place. My first visit to Washington was with my family when I was seven and was way to brief. It was basically a drive through but we did stop long enough to see the monuments and most importantly the stunning Japanese cherry trees in bloom. This is a site that can even impress a seven year old boy!
My second visit was in the early eighties (actually it was the same week that the USA invaded Grenada, an interesting backdrop) and I was basically there to party with a friend of mine going to the University of Maryland located outside of Washington. I actually spent most of my time in College Park in suburb Washington but I did tour the Smithsonian for a day. I came to a conclusion that you can not do this properly in a days time and decided that I had to go back.
My last trip to Washington was back in 1995 when I decided to do the city right. This time I was there for four full days and saw alot. I still left the city wanting to explore more but alas, I will have to do another trip sometime in the future. At least I did see all of the Smithsonian and more. All of it was stupendous and highly recommendable. I came to the conclusion during my last visit that Washington is almost the perfect family vacation spot. It is surprisingly affordable because of the fact that most of the attractions are free. There is also something here for every member of the family such as the National Zoo and the National Gallery. I was kept very busy and I am sure you will be too if you go.
- Pros:So many great attractions and most them are free. Good Restaurants too
- Cons:High crime rate but most likely you not experience any of it.
- In a nutshell:One of the World's Great Capitals!

You got some of the highlights, indeed. Looks like plenty more for future trips, however ;-]
A fine new page! Interesting and insightful tips, as always.
What a comprehensive group of tips. You, I feel, do the best job on VT of covering museums. I found Washington D.C. fascinating as well as important. Plan to return soon to see what I missed before...new WWII Monument, Women in War, etc. Outstanding page.
I've only spent a few days in Washington--nowhere near enough time to see even a fraction of the attractions the city has to offer.
Quite a collection of very interesting tips here! Even though I was 29 on my first visit, those Cherry Blossoms impressed me too! I'd love to go back again to enjoy those museums/galleries - now that I know they are free!!
