Slovakia seems to be an afterthought to many tourist who have just taken in the Czech Republic. This is unfortunate because as a travel destination it has plenty to offer tourists. There are many very good castles to visit, the towns are as equally beautiful as the Czech Republic's or Hungary's and the countryside is stunning. I spent a total of eight days in Slovakia and I wished I had spent at least five more as there is plenty to see.
Most people enter Slovakia by way of Bratislavia. This city, the country's capital has became very aware to the growing tourist industry and is franticly rebuilding and renovating it's old town. Kosice is the country's second city. It is in my opinion actually more beautiful than Bratislavia and only now being discovered by tourists. A highlight to any trip to Slovakia are the Tatras Mountains. These stunning mountains offer all kinds of hiking opportunities for hikers of all levels.
Slovakia does have its problems. It seems to be still getting over a post-Communists hangover that its neighbors have shaken. Therefore some of the tourist infastructure is not what it should be. Also I tired quickly of the food. Still I enjoyed my trip there and would recommend a visit for anybody traveling in the region.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Visually stunning. Very affordable. Great Hiking.
Cons:Bread Dumplings! Still lacking in hotels.

Although Slovakia seems to be well of the beaten tourist path compared to other over-visited European countries, it seems to have some terrific natural sights, interesting architecture, and picturesque towns and cities.

I did consider staying at the Hotel Kyjev, I'm glad I didn't after reading your horror story. I stuck to my usual practice of staying on the edge of town, away for the stag parties.

You mean you didn't like the knedl?? Did you try the halusky? I'm just teasing...I find the food starts to get a bit heavy after a while and my stomach screams "vegetables please!!" (and no, mashed potatoes will not do!).

Another "stellar" page, Paul. Incredible descriptions of the mountain walks and the park. The first hotel does sound horrid. Great to take this virtual tour with such a fine tour guide.
