Nightlife Spot: The Fiddler's Elbow
The Fiddler's Elbow came recommended from by guidebook(Rough Guide) where it was mentioned that Newsweek hated rated this as one of the ten best bars in the world. Well such a claim is subject to argument, I did enjoy the place immensely. The Fiddler's Elbow was but two blocks from my hotel, so that was another reason I decided to stop in. The place was packed with hardly a place to stand. I eventually found a place at the bar beside a sixtish year old man. He turned out to be a Irish Clementine Monk and a very good conversationalist. Anyway this is the kind of establishment that draws both tourists and locals hence you could meet someone from anywhere. Since my visit, there has been another two establishments by the same owners opened up in Venice and Florence.

Nightlife Spot: The Druid's Den
These days as you travel through Europe you cannot help but trip over somekind of Irish pub in any major city. Rome is really no different but for the exception that the two establishments that I visited were older than most. The afore mentioned Fiddler's Elbow and the Druid's Den have both been around since the early 1980's. Out of the two the Druid's Den is larger. In fact it is rather meandering in that once inside you find that it goes on from room to room. When you are looking for this place after dark keep a sharp eye out for it easy to miss as you can see by tiny entrance as seen in this photograph. I found the staff here very friendly. Apparently there is musical entertainment although when visited there wasn't any.

LoriPori Mon Apr 2, 2007 15:35 UTC Absolutely wonderful page on Rome Paul. I enjoyed reading your experiences there esp. Santa Maria Magiore, San Pietro in Vincoli, Pantheon & the Colosseum. Irish Pubs in Rome - and conveniently located near your hotel. What more could you ask for!! | globetrott Fri Mar 17, 2006 18:30 UTC what an excellent page and great pics ! It is amazing to see these buildings, that have survived more than 2000 years already ! | Nemorino Wed Mar 15, 2006 22:58 UTC Cogent descriptions of the architecture, as always. When I was in Rome there was a heat wave and bus strike on, so I didn't get that much out of it. Must try again at some other time of year. | icunme Tue Feb 14, 2006 22:55 UTC Wow - great photos and information. I'll return often to make my way through all your pages. Ciao, Carol |
