Abu Simbel is one of the most glorious monuments of Ancient Egypt. It has a very dramatic setting on the Western shores of the man-made Lake Aswan. In fact it was transported piece by piece to it's present location so as it would not be lost forever beneath the lakewaters in the 1960's. The statues where created upon the orders of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II the Great so as to warn any invaders from the South that they intruding into an empire of great power. Beyond the statues are numerous hieroglyphics that are also stunning. |
