  • Favorite Thing: Telc's town square is one of the most splendid in Central Europe. So highly thought of, that it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The brightly painted Renaissance era facades are certainly some of the most photographed buildings in the Czech Republic.
These facades are actually the product of the town's misfortune. Telc dates from the 14th century when it was a feudal town with a castle surrounded by three ponds. It 1530 the town suffered a horrible fire and the town had to be rebuilt. The governor of Morovia arranged to have Italian masons travel to the town, hence the highly decorative style. As the economic fortunes of the town declined, there was little new building and Telc's town square remains pretty much as it did in the 16th century.

  • Favorite Thing: After visiting the stunning historical town square in Telc, you should consider taking a walk around the three ponds that surround the Rennaisance town centre. These ponds are called Ulicky Pond, Staromestsky Pond and Stepnicky Pond. There are walks around each pond. You can get a map at the tourist office which will chart out the walks and give you explanations about the sites you can visit along the way. Along each route there are ancient churches, which I found to be closed to visitors, and beautiful views of Telc and the Chateau. Not many tourists take these walks, but I found them both relaxing and enjoyable. Interesting enough I probably would not have taken them had it not been a Monday when I visited Telc. The chateau, which I visited the next day, was closed and I had extra time on my hands.

New church tip great addition. Always admire your honest insights. The Pilsner Brewery, churches, castles, and town square are certainly appealing. You do such a nice job with the new photo format [extra photos].

Very interesting selection of places. Telc and Kutna Hora caught my attention I'll definitely want to see them on my trip, this coming summer

VT went down last night just as I was looking through the tips on this page. Came back this morning for the rest. TELC to me is an abbreviation meaning The European Language Certificates – but I see it is also a beautiful town and castle.
