Macdoggie's in front of the Bruges station
When Sarah and John (Macdoggie) visited Belgium we decided to visit Bruges.
Caroline (B_caro) joined us. We bought ourselves a B-day trip, departing from Antwerp.
The train to and from, a trip on the canals, a visit to the Gouden Boom brewery, including a free drink and a gift, costed us each only about 24 Euro in total.
A real good deal!

The macdoggie's on a cycling tour in Bruges
I did it before, I did it again and I will do it another time if I can: having a guided cycling city tour.
We choose for Trip 1: Bruges by bike:
A laid-back cycle of 2,5 hours exploring the backstreets of Bruges, a wonderful insight into the medieval way of life. It is really fun and destressing! Discover at ease the hidden secrets ordinary tourists never get to see on foot.
The guides will lead you down ever winding backstreets, into the old parishes, past windmills, medieval fortifications and along peaceful waterways; with numerous stops along the way to relay some fascinating stories about the medieval times many hardships.
Don't worry, they will lead you as well through that "golden triangle" where cycling gets a bit more tough and where you definitly need a bell to scare those pedestrian tourists `-)
You also make a stop in the eldest pub in Bruges: Caffee Vlissinghe, but more about that in the night life tips.
These tours are in English, if want to be guided in a different language, you need to ask.
Our guide was funny enough a NZ-lander :-) and his name was coincidential Paul. I think it is a popular name over there `-) !
But he knew the history well.

bicycle promotion reduction card
To ban the car and promote cycling in the city, Bruges launched a new card.
From 1st of September 2002 you can buy such a card at 15 Euro.
It grants you:
visits to 3 different museums of your choice and the day rent of a bicycle.
And if this is not enough yet! They spoil you by offering a drink at the museum pub De Zwarte Kat, that is the Folklore Museum.
Don't let this chance slip through your fingers!

Rose at the Bruges Station
There is one trainstation that is pretty close to the city centre, at only 20 minutes walk (10 minutes from the beguinage).
There is a huge square in front of it and in December there will be a tent put up with an exhibition of ice sculptures!
You can take combined train tickets should you want to visit an attraction/exhibition.
It is at a reduced price and it is called B-Dag trip. Ask about it if you want to have a day out by train.
We bought a 10 trip pass that costs 58 euro as of October 2002 and is valid for 10 single trips except bordering stations of surrounding countries.
So you can count if you do any advantage... any trip that costs you more then 5,8 Euro, you better make with this kind of card.
You have to fill in all details on it before you get on the train!

Rose in the train back to Antwerp
Bruges has an excellent train station.
Pity is that the last train back to Antwerp is at 10:05 p.m.(if I am right)
You can look up the schedule of the trains at the website provided in this tip.
