In the Eixample there is one house you should not miss visiting! It is called La Pedrera (1905 to 1910).
Casa Mila, owns its name to the family for which this appartment building was designd for.
Gaudi, could put all his fantasy and ambitions in this design. It is his last civil project. Really a must see! More pictures in the travelogues!
It is almost impossible to believe that when this Casa Mila was build, a lot of nicknames appeared in the news papers, in an attempt to make this design ridiculous.

He who visits Barcelona cannot leave without having a look at one of the most remarkable landmarks of the city: The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. Gaudi. This would become Gaudi?s masterpiece. In 1882 the works at the Neo-gothic church started and the next year Gaudi was assigned to finish the construction. Unfortunately he died in 1926 due to a tragic accident.
There are many things to ask one if you look at the genius masterpiece:
What if Gaudi would have had the new materials we know today, e.g. concrete, modern materials? what kind of forms and figures would he have been able to create with those? If at all he would have? He refused to use cement. He preferred bricks instead, bricks, ceramics and iron art. Nature was his example. In his work, you will very often find organic forms and he often compared his constructions with the construction of a tree, stem, branches, twigs, leaves. I haven?t visited the inside part of the Sagrada Familia, but I have heard the inside is a wood of pillars, splitting up towards the end. There you have the lively proof of Gaudi?s idea described above.

Delicious... it is what we call flan or pudding, vanilla taste but very refined and on top there is some burned liquor to make it all complete! A good tip we got from Pere and Eva on our first evening out, but because we ate so well that night, we had to postpone it to the next day when Marie took us out to one of her favorite restaurants. Don't leave Barcelona without trying it !

Inspired by his many trips abroad to England, and being confronted with the English style of landscape design, Eusebi Guell made the ambitious plan to have a new area developed up the hills, outside the centre of Barcelona. He wanted to combine a chosen design with more natural ?wild? vegetation? living in a park. It was not the aim to create a private park. The wall surrounding the area was only meant to give the inhabitants a secure feeling because at that time, the park was indeed quite some distance of the city itself. He hoped that many rich citizens of Barcelona would be interesting in having a house here, but the response was very poor. Originally sixty parcels were planned, all lying on the hill on sunny places, looking over the valley and the city. Only two of them got sold. The city itself was not really interested in this big project.
Should we be happy? Maybe we should, nowadays it is a marvelous park to walk along.
On this picture you see how Gaudi dealed with the example nature offered him: he didn't flattened the hills to make roads, instead he used diagonal pillars and supporting little walls in a kind of cave-roads.

Along the big square inside the park, Gaudi planned a huge balustrade to prevent visitors from falling down in the depth. But he would not be that marvellous architect/artistic designer if he had done this in a very special way! He made a never-ending bench of the balustrade, making it a meeting point. Due to the many bends of it, it offers a huge amount of space to sit and despite it is so big, you still are able to sit on it in a rather private way. He designed the seat and the back support accordingly to the physiology of the human body. The trick to find the right shape? Well he let one man be seated on still soft plaster and used this plaster model for the rest of the bench.
He used then thousands of broken ceramic tiles and glass pieces to form the great mosaic on the bench that we still can see nowadays. Of course he could impossible do this job on his very own. There fore he trusted on the skill of his employees. The use of the ceramics makes the bench water resistant and very hygienic, another advantage!
The works at the park covered almost 15 years, from 1900 till 1914.
On this picture you see a part of the bench where you have a marvelous view over the sea and a small detail of one of the mosaics.
If I ever come back again, I want to spend more time in this park! Just chill out with a good book maybe :-)
More pictures and info will folow in the Tlogues!
