Looking through the front window...Entrance gate to the historical city of Luxor. After a 3 hours drive by private taxi from Aswan to this popular city in Egypt it is the first marking point i saw again after ten years. Luxor is a rather small city (70.000 inhabitants) but interesting "pivot center" to the many other highlights in Egypt.

A must see : Luxor westbank "the Valley of Kings". The Valley of the Kings contains approximately sixty-two excavated tombs of which the most famous one is the thomb of Toet - No 62 (Attention - extra fee to pay) But inside - it is rather empty -you have to visit the National Museum in Cairo to explore the richness of his tomb. So is this a tourist trap or not ?!

This avenue of Sphinxes leads to Luxor Temple, and combine the body of a lion with the head of Nectanebo I (380-363 B.C.E.). Traveling is my passion, so i like to compare the mountains in Ecuador/France, the beaches in Venezuela/Belgium and also the many gardens. The second picture will show you another comparison - Luxor and Versailles How those monuments where doubled in France - Ask Napoleon I

Deir al Bahri and the elegant thomb, builded for a female Pharao who reigned over Egypt for more than 15 years, next to her son Thoetmosis III. A highlight whenever visiting the West Bank of Luxor.

Luxor has often been called the worlds greatest open air museum, as indeed it is and much more. The number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled anywhere else in the world that know of. Actually, what most people think of as Luxor is really three different areas, consisting of the City of Luxor on the East side of the Nile, the town of Karnak just north of Luxor and Thebes, which the ancient Egyptians called Waset, which is on the west side of the Nile across from Luxor.

The Luxor Temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun-Re, his wife Mut, and his son Khonsu. It was called "Ipet resyt," which means the Southern Opet or the Place of the Seclusion of Amun-Re. It was directly connected to the temple of Karnak, the main cult center of Amun-Re or Amun-Min, the sky god or the ithyphallic fertility god. On the right side of the picture you will see the impressive mosque "Sufi Shaykh"(different religions meet in the temple of Luxor) - on the left the "sacred boat museum"

Luxor Temple is an accretion of structures erected by succeeding kings. The principal entrance today is the Pylon of Ramses II (c.1279-1213 B.C.E.), which is flanked by two seated statues of the king (one is behind the obelisk) and one standing statue (of an original four). The remaining obelisk of pink granite is situated in front of the eastern most seated statue. The western obelisk was a present to France and stands at the Place de la Concorde in Paris since 1836.

The reliefs on the walls of the hall bear the names of Tutankhamun, Horemheb, Seti I, Ramses II and Seti II. Tutankhamun decorated the eastern walls but Horemheb later erased the name of the youngest but most famous king, and inscribed his own.The glamour and cultural fall of succeeding kings

Kuznetsov_Sergey Mon Jun 18, 2007 17:33 UTC Great page about one of the most interesting places in Egypt. I quite agree with you - the tomb of Tutankhamen is a kind of tourist traps. But I consider the collection of artefacts from this tomb in Cairo Museum as the trap as well... Thanks, Luc! | toonsarah Sun Dec 17, 2006 19:24 UTC Interesting tips about a great destination, and very good photos to accompany them. The hotel does indeed sound excellent. | tremendopunto Sat Sep 2, 2006 16:10 UTC Looking at your pics make me want to go there - soon. There is sooooooo much to see!
