Former prisoners - Ushuaia

Former prisoners

Once a prison..

Ushuaia, it's history started in 1902 as a prisoner camp - "Presidio Nacional" and it was till 1947. Nowadays a museum - entrance fee 25 peso, but an interesting tour
Next to this mural design at the avenida San Martin you will find a
commemoration to the Yamana people who lived in this region, and gave the town it's name. Ushuaia meant "bay penetrating westwards" in Yamana native's language.

Beeches - Ushuaia

Beeches

Beeches and "Indian Bread"

The forests covering the shore of the street of Magellan and the mountain slopes of Tierra del Fuego consist largely of two types of trees, so called beeches. Our guide told us everything about beeches : one with deciduous leaves and the other type called “ever green.”
The timber of the first type is not that strong or durable but was mainly used to manufacture chairs and other furniture . It also makes excellent fuel and charcoil.
A common sight in the beeches forest is “Indian Bread” or “Pan de Indio”, a parasite growing on the trees
In the early 20th century prisoners brought the timber into the mills in Ushuaia, using the train, nowadays a touristic highlight in Ushuaia

Train at the end of the world - Ushuaia

Train at the end of the world

Take THE train

Take a train at the end of this world, you will enjoy the history of this train strolling around a beautiful and breathtaking nature.
A railroad track of 7 km, in total it was 27 km and so important for the local industry
Beginning of the past century it was a connection between the little village, the prison and the forest.
No touristic trap at all, i enjoyed the pure nature of this island in southern Argentina.
The 4 singles from Belgium took "Camila" as train, never to late, always on time, no federal strikes !
In Belgium it can be different (NO LOL)

Address: "Tren" at the end of the world.

Beaver dam - Ushuaia

Beaver dam

National Park del Fuego - beavers

The result and tragedy of importing beavers.
In 1940, the gouvernment decided to import 25 couples of beavers from Canada into this area
Nowadays the population of beavers is estimated to be 70.000 and it still grows because beavers have no natural enemies in this area like bears etc. in Canada.
It will become a real tragedy if no solution is founded, soooooon.
Beaver traps like in Canada are not allowed because the trap is "patended" in Canada.
Shooting them is not the real solution. The "morning after pill" ?
The actual gouvernment appointed specialist to solve this problem. But please hurry because what was green last year is nowadays grey.

Map of Tierra del Fuego - from the net - Ushuaia

Map of Tierra del Fuego - from the net

Overview on Argentinian/Chili borders

Thanks to a map of website "Moon Travel Planner" i try to show you what part of the end of the world belongs to Chile or to Argentina.
Ushuaia is located on an island between the street of Magellan and Cape Horn (N>S)
and the Beagle channel and the Martier Glacier (E>W)
Ushuaia is definatly located at Argentina ground, and the most southern CITY of the world.
(approx.45.000 inhabitants)
If you see more closely you will notice "Puerto Williams" more to the south than Ushuaia and property of Chili. But it is a VILLAGE. ( Approx. 3.000 inhabitants)
Try to find a diplomatic solution
Anyhow, you can visit both by boating on the Beagle Channel
There are even special excursions to Puerto Williams
Ushuaia is a small city, nicely located but in my opinion , the bay, the Beagle Channel and not at least National park Tierra del Fuego are the highlights

Ushuaia Bay - Ushuaia

Ushuaia Bay

Exploring Ushuaia bay and beagle channel

The Ushuaia Explorer was a perfect hydrofoil, most recent ship in Ushuaia, to bring us to the channel at the end of the world. Three decks, local bar and private television for the one who couldn't bare the cold on the upper deck. Looking at different small islands of specific animals, and finally boating around the famous lighthouse and back to Ushuaia city itself.

Don't miss an excursion to the only national protected area of the Island.
The Park is located 12 kilometers to the west of Ushuaia city, neat the international borderline with Chile. Within the park you will find and appreciate the local flora coñposed by beech trees and different kinds of bushes and flowers:
The park reserves animals such as red foxes, beavers, rabbits and many species of birds.
The history and dramatic presence of the beavers is another story, they ruin the forrest

Ushuaia Explorer - Ushuaia

Ushuaia Explorer

Exploring Ushuaia bay

A must to see at the end of the world, a hydrofoil trip in the bay.
The tour starts at the pier "Don Eduardo Arturo Brisighelli", and navigates along the coast of Ushuaia, with views of city buildings, the Marine Museum (old prison), the Museum of the End of the World and industrial areas.
As the city is left behind, the landscape is a combination of sea and mountains, and the mounts Olivia, Five Brothers, the Fique and estancias (Patagonian ranches) can be seen. The hydrofoil sails on the Beagle Canal, towards the southwest, arriving next to the “Les Eclaireurs” lighthouse,
