Chiang May (northern Thailand) in combination with " Chiang Rai (location of the "long neck" tradition is a topic when visiting Thailand.
This area is the location of the "Mountain people" of Thailand
Most of the time - after arriving in Bangkok - the second destination of Thailand (750km from BK and for backpackers - a train will bring you there).It is a paradise for lovers of nature - many excursions are organised - visiting the locals (long neck ladies )- elephant rides - this is paradise - but very touristic !
The hotel acco's are the best - the night markets are cheaper than BK
