Just walk and walk and walk and get lost in the streets of Venice. Try to get away from just the main tourist areas and discover quiet streets, local shops and homes. Lovely. I found that walking in the area around the arts university in Venice was very interesting, there were barely any tourists around the area at all. And I was there in June at the beginning of the peak season! Getting away from the other tourists! Pretending that you discovered Venice all on your own.

Without a doubt, you MUST see Basilica San Marco - and I mean not just the outside - you have to go in! Don't let the long lines turn you off either. Basilica San Marco is definitely the best church I have ever been to, it was very impressive. I even liked it over St Peters in Vatican City, to me it was just so much more interesting. Tip: If visiting the Basilica during peak season, arrive 45 min before the Basilica opens in the morning, that way, you'll get in as soon as it opens, rather than having to wait 2 hours with all the other punters! The photo here is a sample of some of the amazing artwork at the top/outside of the Basilica.

Mosaics on the floor like this are completely amazing and beautiful. Again, this picture is from a postcard I scanned because you are not allowed to take photos inside.

Go into a mask shop and check out the workmanship and creativity. Totally amazing. That's a pic of me with my favourite mask in the shop.

Visit Ca' del Sol, a mask shop in Venice. To the left is the wall display inside the shop. They are all works of art! The lady who runs the shop is very nice and lets you try them all on, it's lots of fun!
