On the Pecos River

Where Interstate 25 crosses the Pecos River is the old Santa Fe trail town of San Jose, NM. The town is one catholic church and a post office surrounded by an eclectic variety of dwellings. Everything from old locally produced adobes houses to recreational vehicles parked on bare lots. The river is shallow enough to wade across but has pools deep enough to swim in. The east side of the river is mostly flat irrigated farm land with bluffs and high ground rising up after a 100 meters or less of flood plain fields. On the west side of the river the bluffs come down to the river and leave no room for farming.

Our shack on the bluff

Bec and I own 3.8 acres on the bluff over the river. Temperatures in summer are warm but not hot, but the winter cold sends us back down south to Las Cruces. The "shack" as we call it needs a lot of work and upgrades to be a liveable house, but that is what provides me with entertainment during the summer months. The shack has a sunken living area with a 2nd story and even a turret on top. The turret acts as a chimney for heat though. Way to hot for comfort in the turret during the summer. We also have a recreational vehicle we park near the shack and live in while plodding along with upgrades. Someday, maybe, we will have someplace we would be willing to spend all year in.
