The line you see on the cliff in the picture is the road. Think very carefully about the HANA road trip before you go. I just wanted to add to the other comments about this drive. The trip is fine for the first couple of hours but after you get to the end of the road you have to come back the same route. The rent a car contract does not allow you to drive the car off of the pavement. To keep going around the island is on rough unpaved road so even though you have a four wheel drive rental, I do not think it is worth the risk to keep going. Of course turning around means another 4 hours or so driving back over the same road you came out on. If anyone tends to get nauseous this trip is not for them. The turns and switchbacks with the vegetation going by, will make most passengers and a few drivers long for the turn out and rest stop. Pack snacks and water. There are a few places to buy food and drinks along the way but they are so few and far between that there is always a crowd. Tank up before leaving. The temptation is to stop at every opportunity early in the trip. I recommend waiting because once the queasy, cross eyed feeling takes hold you will want to stop and there are turn outs and spectacular views every 25 yards or so--at each curve. This drive is one of the main tourist activities on Maui but I think springing for the Helicopter ride is a better investment and use of time. But if you have never been in a jungle before, the Hana road is your chance. I do not recommend the drive but it is sold pretty hard in all the brochures and in the hotel activity planners. AVOID THE BUS OR VAN TOURs AT ALL COSTS. Nausea city on the bus 8-( Enjoy
