There is a lot more to do in Austria than shop but that was our main tourist activity. From Garmish, Germany by car. First you go up, up , up and then you hit the pass and have a panoramic view of the valley and start down, down, down into Austria. After you reach the valley floor you turn onto the E17 toward Innsbruck and follow the Inn River. To get info on Innsbruck click on this link. Innsbruck statistics Where you find out about their Olympic hosting and transshipment of heroin and cocaine. Anyway it is a lovely town and you are driving through a gorgeous valley with huge snow covered peaks on either side. As you leave Innsbruck heading back toward Munich on the E-17 you will be following the Inn River and passing by numerous small factory towns where crystal is made. Watten is the home of the world famous Swarovski crystal factory and their showroom is open for visitors. On up the road are other towns with glass blowing, and local crafts. I enjoyed shopping in the shops and seeing the rock and crystal objects. Get off of the freeway and drive up the river road stopping when you see an interesting town or factory. I only visited this one corner of Austria and Socrates_07 has a much more comprehensive page. If you are in Garmish and want to go over to Lake Chiemsee I do highly recommend going through Austria instead of back up to Munich and then down to Chiemsee. In the picture I am about 17 years old 8-) |
