This picture is me and my mother-in-law at Linderhof (Ludwig II's main residence) in 1990. The first time I was in Augsburg was from 1974-1976. I was stationed there as a Tank Commander in the 63rd Armor. We frequently drove down to Garmish, Chiemsee, and Berchesgarten to ski. Garmish was the most convenient but Chiemsee was my favorite. Mad Ludwig had a lot of castles. The famous one Neueschwanstin (where he was arrested before it was completed), near Hohen-Schwangau (his parents main castle/residence), the one he actually lived in, Linderhof and one at Herren-Chiemsee, on an Island in the Lake. He was murdered at Berg (another castle near Munich), under circumstances that are still not known. Officially, he committed suicide by drowning after killing the Doctor responsible for declaring him "Mad". Most people do not make it to Linderhof because it is not famous, but it is the most beautiful, complete, and indicative of Ludwigs life style. It is good to be king! From Augsburg drive south through Landsberg (famous medival town) and down to Oberamergau (famous passion play town). Just past Oberamergau turn right to Linderhof. You won't be sorry. |
