I have to warn about the women gypsies! They're fairly easy to spot - they always wear long flowery skirts and they usually haven't bathed in days. Sometimes you see them wagging around a baby as they beg for money. They're everywhere and after the 'Gubileo' last year, they're looking for fresh victims to rip off. The relatively harmless ones beg alone for coins on the metro or parking lots. The more dangerous ones travel in 'packs' of 2-3 and while one tries to distract you (sometimes pushing a piece of cardboard up to your body), another makes a quick grab at your purse, wallet, cellular phone, video camera... whatever they can catch. My advice is to avoid them as much as possible and watch their hands. If they come at you, don't worry about being 'rude' - protect yourself using any means - verbal (loud shouting) or physical (use your best judgement here). They're not going to do you any favors if you're polite with them.
