Eastern Europe. The Way Forward

by jrgentle - last update: Oct 29, 2003

A trip back in time

A local artists' view of Prague
Yes, the “Paris of the East”. For those of you who have been there, you will know of what I speak. It’s like walking back in time. The city still looks the way it did about 600 years ago, thanks to a wonderful Czech habit of surrendering whenever they were about to be attacked. Its been about 9 years since I last set foot in this wonderful European capital. And it was as spectacular as I remembered. For this trip I was in the company of two of my best friends, Maunie and Keith. In total, we only spent one night there, but it was a glorious night. We started off by going to dinner in this really beautiful Greek restaurant. The meal was outstanding, and of course, the accompanying beers were superb. For those of you who have never been there, Prague has the best beer in the world. As an added bonus, the waitresses and the hostesses were bona fide Hotties. The night was shaping up nicely I would have said, if you could have stopped me from staring and asked me. So, to make sure we were believed upon our return to Germany, I took pictures. Next, it was off to sample the nightlife. I am not sure how many clubs and bars we went into that night, but it was a plethora. I will try to describe a few of them. We went to this club called Loveka, which was right on the river looking up towards the castle. I was here on my first trip to Prague, and although it looked different, it was still the mad, crazy, place I remember. Oh, and the club had added half-naked dancing girls for posterity. Due to its view and location, it was packed with tourist. Lots of Brit and American girls. Flirtations galore. Next, we went to this club located right ”below” the main square of Prague. Above is where the Velvet revolution began and downstairs in the “Dungeon” we started our own “Red Bull and Vodka (RB&V)” revolution. This place must have been 500 years old and it looked it. It was now a slightly techno club complete with girls dancing on the tables. We loved it. For some reason we kept meeting all these American girls. At one point we were beginning to wonder if we would meet any Czech girls. It was about this time that I met Romana, this absolutely gorgeous Czech girl, with the sweetest smile. (And no it was not the RB&V). She took us to this other bar and at this point I lost track of my compatriots as I chatted away with this young lady. Eventually, we all decided to go to this other club. As it was about 5:30am they were about to close and wouldn’t let us in. So I walked Romana to her train with the promise to meet again that day. When I got back to the club, the guys were talking to a bunch of ex-pats out in front and I just kind of chilled out watching the crowd leave this club. This is when this tall, gorgeous Czech girl walks out of the club, walks straight over to me, and smacks me with the biggest kiss. A wet one. As shocked as I was, it was nothing compared to the looks on Maunie and Keith’s face. I quickly regrouped, and we proceeded to suck face rolling against this taxi parked out front. Eventually, we came up for air, and she stuck an invitation to this other club into my hand. Like a bloodhound, I followed. At 6am on a Sunday morning there are not many places that are open, so you tend to get everyone who is still up, all in the same club. Well this place was definitely not in any tourist book. We had inadvertently discovered the delicate soft underbelly of the Prague nightlife. Pimps and hookers coming off the night shift were the main clientele. So here I am, lured to the lower depths of Czech society, and having the time of my life. We stayed around until about 9am, and then we dragged ourselves back to the apartment we rented for the night. There is no rest for the wicked, so a few hours later we were up and out again to meet the lovely Romana on the beautiful Historic Charles Bridge. We spent the afternoon shopping, taking pictures, and having coffee in this wicked café on the river. We headed back to Germany with fond memories and a definite promise to return soon.
