Kyoto doesn't impress everyone so don't go expecting it to be the perfect Japanese destination. Lots of Kyoto is just big ugly city and the old world parts are often crowded with Japanese and foreign tourists.
There are some lovely areas and if you time it right(eg. do you want to fight your way down the street just because it's cherry blossom season?) and know where to go then it can be a magical experience. There are many lovely places close to Kyoto which I think are just as nice and many people I know prefer them so it can be good to use Kyoto as a base and see a wider area.
This photo is Kyo mizu dera which has just recently been planted with even more cherry blossoms, it gives a nice view of Kyoto and is conveniently located on a suggested route thorugh Kyoto for tourists.

Places I have been recently which I haven't written about yet are Nijojo which is a must see with its beautiful nightingale floor (it squeaks just like a nightingale!) and Kinkakuji which was okay and the grounds were nicer than I expected but you can't go into the gold temple and if its busy you will feel like you are being rushed around a narrow path not able to take good photos until you can breathe again when you get to the exit. However it wasn't too crowded when I was there and I took a lovely photo of it.
Sanjugendo is also a must see with its 1000 Buddah statues.
