Bath or to give it its roman name of Aqua Sulis is built upon the crater of an ancient extinct volcano. Originally a Roman Settlement, Bath is built around the famous hot water springs which rise to the surface and are reputed to have healing powers. A large bathing complex was built by the romans over 2000 years ago around the hot springs, the remains of which can visited today. Bath is prodominently a Georgian city and became the vogue in that era for the upper and middle classes to partake of its healing waters. As a city goes, its small but has lots of character. The first coronation of any of England's Kings (Edgar in 973AD) took place in Bath. It was also the home of the astronomer William Herschel, discoverer of the plantet Uranus, his house is open for viewing and Jane Austin based one of her novels upon the City of Bath. |
