We went to Jorden especially to see Petra, the Rose Rock City, timeless and beautiful, also the background for the Indiana Jones film. I only spent 2 days there but I loved the mystery and the the thought of all those people carving out this glorious city.
Petra (the Rose Red City or "rock" in Greek) dates back to 7000BC to Neolithic villages at Al-Beidha. This was also the home of the Edomites (c1200BC) and it became a Nabatean settlement and part of an important trade route (6th century BC).
By the 12th to 19th century AD, Petra had become a forgotten city known only to the Bedouins. It was finally rediscovered in 1812 by a young Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt who immersed himself in Arab and Muslim culture and disguised himself as an Arab en-route to making a sacrifice at the nearby tomb of Haroun (Aaron).
