When I say "the other side of Michigan", I don't mean this in a bad way. It's just that Ann Arbor has a reputation of being just a little bit "different". Sort of like Berkeley in California, or Austin in Texas, or Boulder in Colorado. A^2 is, just as many of the above are to varying degrees, a semi-bohemian town with very strong ties to a university - in this case the University of Michigan.
It's in Ann Arbor that John F. Kennedy made his speech proposing the inception of the Peace Corps. The darkly infamous punk rocker GG Allin played there many times at the Blind Pig, a local bar. Ann Arbor is home to the Hash Bash, one of the biggest marijuana celebrations in the world; Planet Rock, the largest indoor rock climbing gym in the USA; and the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, one of the biggest art fairs in the country.
There's a lot of color and history in the town, and it's probably my favorite place in Michigan. I hope I can share some of what I know with you. |
