Universitätsstadt - Würzburg

by aeaendy - last update: Oct 3, 2003

I lived in Würzburg for three years studying there. Have moved four times from one apartment to the other, from one part of the city to the other. Now I know many things about this city and if anybody should have any questions about Würzburg, I am sure I could help out quite a bit.

Würzburg can be split into two halfs: the students and the rest. You have to see yourself in which half you fit better.
Plus, there are also many, many Americans in this city because of the large military base Leighton Barracks... Walking around downtown you will notice that almost every third person is an American!!! OK, so lets say Würzburg can be split up into three parts!!!

But the most important thing I have learned about Würzburg is that it is definitely the most beautiful city in Franconia, maybe even in Bavaria and I feel it is the place I would love to grow old in and that is why I am planing on moving back there when I am finished studying in Augsburg!!!

And it is Franconian wine that always makes a visit to Würzburg an unforgetable experience.

Facts about Würzburg

Würzburgs history goes pretty far back into the year of 1000 BC when a Celtic stronghold was built atop the Marienberg. In 742 AD St. Boniface founded the bishopric of Würzburg and named St. Burkard the first bishop. Marienberg Fortress is the symbol of the city. Built on the original stronghold in 704 was the Marienkirche and, around it at the start of the 13th century, the first fortified castle. The medieval fortress was the seat of the Prince-Bishops for more than 500 years.

Many pretty good artists such as Riemenschneider, Tiepolo and Neumann left nice artwork for us behind. First and foremost, Balthasar Neumann with his splendid Baroque edifice, the onetime Palace of the Prince-Bishops.

But not only that, Würzburg is known as the "Gateway to the Romantic Road" which crosses through some of the most beautiful cities in Bavaria such as Tauberbischofsheim, Rothenburg o. d. T., Feuchtwangen, Augsburg, Schongau, Steingaden, Schwangau and last but not least Füssen which is at the feet of the alps.

About 127.966 people live in the 87,56 km² sized Würzburg which makes it a not too big and not too small city which is defintely a plus for Würzburg!
Some of the little towns around Würzburg and along the river Main, which are also surrounded by hundreds of vineyards are Güntersleben, Veitshöchheim, Höchberg, Rottendorf, Gerbrunn, Ochsenfurt and Giebelstadt and a sweet tiny town called Sommerhausen which I have also have a page about...
