There is a wide range of accomodation in the town and the security situation is excellent.
The magnificent Museo de Escultura (at the site of the ruins) has been completely renovated. Don't skip the city museum off the main plaza which is very good and open seven days a week.
Admission to the site is either in Lempira or US dollars.
Copan occupies an 80 mile long valley on the banks of the Copan River surrounded by steep 3000 foot mountains. There are excellent opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, birdwatching etc.
Copan was made a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1980 and a national monument by the government of Honduras in 1982.
