NEW FACE PORTUGUESE RESTAURANT

The eats at the New Face draw heavily on Goan and Macanese influences. Shanghainese Chef Chen Xin, who learned his craft in Macao, is lavish in his use of spices. His curry dishes are piquant and robust, and the portions are quite large.
New Face is an ideal lunch spot. Right now, for a mere Y38, you can feast on their daily lunch special, which features the soup of the day -- a clear, flavorful ox tail soup the first day we went, a hearty cream of chicken the next -- plus a generous main course and complimentary coffee or tea. Try the baked fresh scallop appetizer (Y38), served on the half-shell and smothered in garlic butter. And the onion rings are the best I've tried in Beijing. With its well-stocked bar and respectable wine list, New Face may well hook the dinner-and-drinks crowd as well.
