At the north west frontier Turpan is a medium sized town in the Xinjoiang Uygur region, north west of China, in an area where most of the population is uygur, the main religion is muslim and you can still find some traces of the old Silk Road. |
| | An oasis Best known for being the lowest spot in China (337m below sea level), Turpan is a real oasis of grapes and melons in the middle of the vaste and inhospit Takla Makan desert, once an important stop for camel caravans in the Silk Road. |
A lively spot What I liked best in Turpan was to walk about its shady quiet streets, sneak on its patios and alleys and visit its lively interesting markets, where you could see the mix of races and cultures in this strategic spot of China. | | |

sachara Mon Mar 5, 2007 07:02 UTC Joaquin, thanks for this interesting page. I plan to go to Turpan next year on my way to the total solar eclipse in the area of Hami. Good suggestion to bring the silkroad music of Kitaro. I love this music too from the moment I saw that documentary. | titti Tue Sep 19, 2006 21:15 UTC fried things??
