Barcelona has got a lot of modernist buildings, you can see them all around the city centre, some famous, some not so famous. And you can find also delicious little details, as the mosaics in this ticket box of the Palau de la Musica...

In the Gothic Quarter, not far from the Placa del Rei, you can find this quiet little terrace, where you can have a drink surrounded by old charming stnoe walls. One of them is the Cathedral, so I think it won't be hard to find (I can't remember the exact address).

This is something I liked of BCN. You can find palm trees in the most unexpected places and corners. And this trees give the city a defined mediterranean flavour, a certain exotic touch. This places are like urban oasis in a way...

I found these street puppets in the square in front of the Cathedral. There are there many street artists everyday, so is a good place to hang around, sit down and watch the people go by (beware of pickpockets BTW). These puppets were sooo big... and they were all managed by a single guy, who also played music... it was gorgeous!

Not all the modernist highlights in BCN are by Gaudi... This modernist hospital, designated UNESCO monument in 1997 was designed by Domenech i Montaner. Being a public hospital you can visit it for free, though there are guided tours too. It is a whole block of buildings, with some green areas in between. In the main entrance, look up to the magnificient ceilings. Then you can admire the many pavillions with their fairy tale decorations, go inside, visit the tunnels net underground (used as a refugee in the Civil War) and have a coffee in its bar... Metro: Hospital Sant Pau, Cartagena street exit.

As you walk along the Ramblas U can see many street artists performing various shows. One of the more popular are these "living statues", persons in disguised, frequently painted in metallic colours, who stand still for a while. When U stop and throw them a coin, they make a slow "mechanical" movement to thank you for your contribution.

MalenaN Wed Jan 2, 2008 09:18 UTC Barcelona sounds to be a lovely city! I'm really looking forward to my first visit there later this year. Great tips! | ronaldpk Fri Nov 17, 2006 22:03 UTC You've missed to mention the 13 geese of Santa Eulallia. For me, they were the cutest surprise in the Gothic Quarter! | knips Tue Oct 10, 2006 17:25 UTC Seems to be the square of the final scene of "The Perfume", where Jean-Baptiste Grenouille perfumes himself so irresistible that he's been eaten up by the people at the place. | Jerelis Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:07 UTC For a stay of only one day, you have seen quite a lot. We've just returned from a three day stay. Still had the idea we haven't seen it all :-) |
