Cocido is the most typical dish from Madrid. You can have it in many restaurants, but there are classical cocido restaurants if you are interested. It consists of chick peas, cabbage, chorizo, blood sausage or pudding and vegetables, stewed in broth. You must have that in 2 plates: - First U take a soup with some pasta on it. - Then U take the main plate (see photo). And you must order always both, they don't serve it separate. It's enough for a meal... too much maybe!!

Restaurant Name: Eat at a terrace
In this pedestrian little street you can find several restaurants with terraces, where you can find the world famous paella while you see people walking by. If you prefer something more 'spicy' try the famous patatas bravas (fried potatoes with chili sauce) in a little bar called 'Las Bravas'. You can have the spanish tortilla ('tortilla de patatas') with the same sauce as well.

Restaurant Name: Delicious tapas and interesting decoration
This little bar is located in the "Literary Quarter" of Madrid, between the Prado and Atocha. The first thing that will attract you (and amuse you) as you enter is the barroque decoration with typical spanish memorabilia, from toreros to saints, posters, statues... every inch of the wall is filled!! The tapas% here (called "canapes" wich is like a big tapa on a slice of bread) are excellent and assorted, from "serrano" ham to salmon, tortilla... Beers for 1 euro, canapes for 2,20 euros.

Very close to the 'Puerta del Sol', this tiny restaurant offers tasteful 'tapas' to have just before lunch or (why not?) instead of it. Ask for the famous 'bacalao' (haddock) along with a chilly beer ('caña). For the haddock you have to go to the counter at the right, buy the portions you want and then go to the main hall to ask for the drink. Here was founded in the 19th century the socialist spanish party (PSOE).

Of course, this is the place to taste to heavenly Jamón Serrano, a kind of smokey-dried ham. You can ask for a sandwich (bocata), have it alone with olive oil, with bread and tomato...

VIPS This chain of shops-restaurants has several places in all Madrid. Their salads are great (I mean BIG too!) and my favourite dessert is the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream. (Mmmm!). Open till 3 o'clock in the morning, 7 days a week. Books, presents, souvenirs, papers...<BR Serrano, 41. Tel.: 91-5771290 / Gran Vía, 43. A new & cool cafe, very freshly decorated. Young cosmopolitan ambience with a 'spanish' flavour. It opens at night too as 'Bar de Copas'. Try the Pincho de Tortilla (a small sandwich of spanish tortilla), 'Pantumaca' (this is a speciality from Catalonia, a slice of bread with tomato, ham and olive oil) and 'Tapas'.
