Things To Do: Arco de la Villa (Town's Arch)

  • Vejer de la Frontera - Plaza de Espana through de Arch

  • This arch is a former gate in the City Walls. It is located in a corner of the Plaza de Espana, at the right of the Town Hall.

As modern houses have been built by the walls, the arch doesn't seem a gate of the deffensive walls anymore, but it once was a gate to enter the fortified town...

Things To Do: House of Marques de Tamaron
  • Tip Rating:
  • This big mansion was built in the 17-18th centuries near the outer city walls. Now it houses the Municipal Tourism Office. It is located by the Segur Arch.

Its ground floor is rather original, as here this kind of rock is not used in construction as often as in Cadiz.

Things To Do: Casa del Mayorazgo
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the Entailed State House. It is a barroque style mansion built in the 18th century. It is built by the old city walls and it shares a tower with it.
It is not very well signaled, and it looks just like a normal private house (actually, there's people living there now!) but just go in, cross the 1st patio and in the 2nd patio you will find the tower.

Things To Do: Torre del Mayorazgo
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the Tower inside the Entalied State House. To climb it you will have to enter the house and cross the 2 patios. Climb a few steps and you will enjoy from the top a wonderful view of the town and the valleys around it.

Free entrance, but you can leave a tip in a green box at the entrance.

    Things To Do: Jewish Quarter
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vejer de la Frontera - The former synagogue
  • The former synagogue

  • Known in spanish as Barrio de la Judería. This small quarter in the highest part of town was the area where the jewish community lived before they were expulsed in the 16th century. You can still see some signs of that, like the David Star in the main facade what now is the main church of the area.

Things To Do: Plaza de España
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vejer de la Frontera - The square from above

  • This is the main square here. Here is located the Town Hall and is a very busy place in the evenings, when locals come to see and be seen.
There is a nice central fountain all covered with painted tiles and the palm trees give this square a very tropical look...

Hans and I had the good fortune to see this wonderful town with Carmen and Stace. I regret that we did not get introduced properly & did not have much opportunity to chat in Marbella. Perhaps next time we are in Spain. Lori
