But indeed Gonder is a wonderful city, one of the main in Ethiopia and has a lot of highlights and things to see. The main attraction is possible the MEDIEVAL CASTLES, some astonishing stone castles with portuguese and indian influences. There is a whole Royal Enclosure with churches, libraries, reception Halls...

Debre Berhan Selassie Church

This is one of the most famous churches in Ethiopia and it deserves a visit for its incredble mural paintings. The ceiling, with many many angels is specially beautiful. It is said to have been built to house the Ark of the Covenants, this is why it has this uncommon (in Ethiopia most churches are round) rectangular shape.

Gonder is the starting point of many trekking trips to the Simien Mountains National Park. If you still have the idea of Ethiopia as a desert, a visit to the Simien will make you change your mind, is one of the greenest landscapes I have ever seen!!

I liked Gonder too with its amazing castles. You are right there is not much in Debark. I stayed there in the worse hotel during my trip in Ethiopia.
