  • This little (tiny) byzantine village in the southeast of the Peloponessos is really a hidden treasury in Greece. Not far from Athens (5 hours) is not often included in tourists packs, so is not as crowded as most of the tourist places of Peloponessos.

Surrounded by a medieval wall, the town has been admirably well preserved and a walk by its pedestrian cobbled alleys takes you directly to byzantine and medieval times...

    Off The Beaten Path: Patmos
  • Tip Rating:
  • Patmos is a rather strange island. Located in the far east of the Aegean, it's got a special mystic atmosphere.
Here is where St.John wrote its Apocalypse books of the Bible. There is still a monastery built around the cave where he had the Revelations.
In the main village, Hora, there is an amazing medieval castle and a byzantine cobbled road around.

Besides, it is not a very crowded island and, though being rocky and not very green, it's got a few good beaches too...

Off The Beaten Path: Keramikos Cemetery (Athens)
  • Tip Rating:
  • 148 Ermou St. Athens

To visit a cemetery might not seem as a pleasant activity, but this one in Athens has got a lot of masterpieces such as stelae and tombs.

The ancient Kerameikos lied on the north-west of ancient Athens and spread both inside and outside the walls which can be found now at the site of the excavations. In the centre of the site you can see the two most famous gates of ancient Athens, the Dipylon and the Sacred Gate. The area around these gates was the most ancient and largest cemetery known in Attica. It was also the burial place of the most famous citizens of Athens.

  • Messolonghi (or Messolongi or Missolonghi) is famous for being the place of one of the most famous sieges in the Greece Independent War against Otoman Empire (1826).
For most foreigners, Messolonghi is the place where Lord Byron died, in 1824, of a fever that was probably a relapse of the malaria that he had contracted in 1811.

Off The Beaten Path: Butterflies Valley (Paros)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not far from Parikia (Paros) there is a valley called Petaloudes where, in July & august, thousands of butterflies gather and cover all.
You can take a bus there. At the bus stop there is normally a local peasant waiting for tourists. He takes you up the valley in his pick up for 1 euro. Walking is about 20 minutes...
