"Bergama, Pergamo, Pergammon..." Bergama by SirRichard

Bergama Travel Guide: 148 reviews and 586 photos

Bergama, also called Pergamo, Pergamum and Pergammon, was a very important greek / roman location in the coast of Asia Minor (Turkey).
Modern Bergama is a small town, but yet there is a lot to see: the ancient Acropolis and the fantastic hillside theater, the archeological museum, the Red Basilica, and the Asclepion (medical center) with many marble columns.

The origins

Bergama began to grow after the death of Alexander the Great. One of his generals (Lysimachus) chose Pergamum to place nine thousand talents of gold under the guardianship of Philetaerus (his lieutenant). After the death of Lysimachus, Philetaerus took advantage of this wealth and founded the independent dynasty of Attalid Kings which later became the centre of Hellenistic civilization.

tks for judicious twinning berlin/pergamo and remember also that the word "parchment" derived from latin "pergama"...
