A classical restaurant in Istanbul. It was one of the favourites of the hippies that in the 60's started here their travels to India by bus. Divanyolu caddesi, 6, close to the hyppodrome and the cisterns. If you don't know the turkish cuisine, tell the waiter and he will go with you to the kitchen and show you right there all the items they serve. You just point at 2 or 3 and they will serve you that!

This is one of the first little restaurant you can find at the right side of Divan Yolu as you go up the street from Hagia Sophia. The owner is always at the door “fishing” customers. Cool stuff and moderate prices. They have fix menus too. Try the thick yoghourt!

Orient Express Restaurant

Founded in 1890, this restaurant is one of the few remains of the golden age of Sirkeci Railway Station, when it was the ending point of the famous “Orient Express” train. Now it has been refurbished and decorated with all kind of memorabilia about Agatha Christie and the 30s. I haven’t had lunch there, just saw it from outside but seemed a quiet fresh place for lunch out of the rush of Eminonu Area.

Fish sandwiches at Eminonu

At the Eminonu pier, near the Galata Bridge, you can find a couple of little boats that sell fish sandwichs with tomate. The fish is fresh, just fished and they cook it (grill) right there. They cost 1 euro each, and you can buy some drink in one of the many bars by the ticket office. I had mine with a hot (bloody hot) tea, standing on a fence looking at the rush of Galata Bridge…

Hoca Cami Street

This little alley offers a great variety of local restaurants, with nice terraces on the street. Is a bit apart from the traffic, so is nice, specially for dinner. In these restaurants you don’t have menu, you go to the kitchen and poin to the dishes you wanna eat. To get there, take Ankara Caddesi from Sirkeci Railway Station, turn left at Ebusuud Caddesi, and take the first at the left, towards the Hoca mosque.

This meat & vegetables sandwiches in a round bread are typical turkish “take away” food. The man at the stand will cut you the meat from the column, add some salad, tomato, sauces… and put all this mixed into an “envelope” bread!! Delicious, but take many napkins, it’s really difficult to eat that, LOL You can find these everywhere, this pic was taken on the one at Eminonu pier, building number 3.
