Lima Things to Do

Things To Do: The Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located in the Plaza de Armas is probably one of the most visited buildings in Lima. Try to visit it on sundays as you will see more activity, people coming to masses, and even some parade in the square. Entrance is free, though you can hire a guide to explain you the many chapels and paintings inside.
Inside is buried Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru, and his tomb can be visited.

Plaza Mayor And Surroundings: Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the main square in Lima and the centre of the old town. It is always busy, with people coming and going and often parades, demonstrations... 140 square meters.
    Around it you will find:
    - The Cathedral
    - Archibishop Palace
    - Government Palace
    - Pizarro statue

Buildings In Colonial Style: Jiron de la Union
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lima Buildings In Colonial Style
  • Empty! (7 am on a sunday)

  • This wide pedestrian street is the main avenue in Lima, at least for tourists. It goes from San Martin square to Plaza de Armas and is all day and night busy and crowded (well, the photo was taken at 7am on a sunday!).
There are many shops, bars and even old colonial buildings along the street. Is the place for souvenirs in case you are looking for that.

    Things To Do: Miraflores
  • Tip Rating:
  • Miraflores is a distric by the coast, in the south of Lime. It's a modern residential area, with big commercial avenues, nice parks and cottages. There are many bars, restaurants, hotels and some of the best beaches inside Lima (though this doesn't mean they are specially good).
It is the place where you will go for a room in most of the case, tough I found Barranco (a bit southwards) a more convenient, cheap and quiet district.

    District Of Barranco: Barranco
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lima District Of Barranco
  • Barranco on a lazy sunday evening
  • by SirRichard

  • Barranco is a coastal district located in the very south east, below Miraflores. It has always been a "boheme" neighborhood, place for artists and special people. It is more relaxed and unspoiled than Miraflores, and not much further in fact. For me it is in fact a much better option for accomodation and even for more special restaurants and bars, as there are fewer cars and more pedestrian areas.

More Churches And Convents: Santo Domingo church
  • Tip Rating:
  • Santo Domingo is the 2nd best known church here, after San Francisco. Is located near the Plaza de Armas too, and the convent and courtyards can be visited in guided tours. Just buy your ticket and wait till the group is big enough. Inside the building you will find 2 beautiful and quiet patios with amazing tiled walls (original spanish tiles of the 17th century). Here is the tomb of Santa Rosa de Lima and San Martin de Porres (one of the few black saints).

Things To Do: Santo Domingo Convent Library
  • Tip Rating:
  • Inside this church there is a wonderful old library thatyou can visit with the guided tour. Unfortunately it is closed to the public, you can only see it from the entrance, but imagine what fascinating books you can find here!

Plaza San Martin: San Martin square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lima Plaza San Martin
  • San Martin in the early morning
  • by SirRichard

  • This is the second biggest and more famous square in Lima. It is located in the historical centre and there is located the Bolivar Hotel, as well as many nice official buildings.

More Churches And Convents: La Merced
  • Tip Rating:
  • This colonial church is maybe nicer inside than outside, tough its fron facade is outstanding. But as it is in a narrow street you can't really appreciate it at its best.
In this church (at the original one) took place the first mass ever in Lima (1534).

Buildings In Colonial Style: Post Office
  • Tip Rating:
  • Near the Plaza de Armas, by the corner where the Pizarro monument is, you will find this beautiful building wit an inner arcade with many shops, apart from the mailboxes, stamps and so. There are even bars and souvenir shops in here and, even though you are not buying anythin, is a good place to walk around.
