Little is known of this amazing culture that once inhabited the south shore of Lake Titicaca. They were here before the Inca's domination and developed a relatively advanced culture, with many mysteries, as a bearded white sjinned God named Viracocha....

Tiahuanaco (also called Tiwanaku, or Tihuanaku) is located in between the Titicaca Lake and Bolivia's capital, La Paz (1 hour from it).
It once was in the shore of the Lake but due to coastline changes now happens to be many kilometres away...

They developed an interesting architecture, built temples, pyramids, giant totems and had supernatural beliefs.
The legend says this people disappeared in the jungle after their white bearded God Viracocha "followed the sun through the sea waves" one day...

This thing with Viracocha and the Inca seems to be good fairy-tale material. It does not make Inca achievements more real though. My visit in Bolivia and Peru were quite the eye opener.

Joaquin, good tips on Tiahuanaco, especially the transportation tips. They bring back fond memories. There is much more to discover there. I want to go back in a few years.
