Ho Chi Minh is venerated as a national hero and father of the republic. Though he requested cremation, they have built him a "sovietic style" mausoleum, that includes also a palace, museum , some parks, a traffic-free area... Admission free. You may find long queues, mostly locals, to see embalmed corpse of Uncle Ho.

This is the little 18th century temple located in the middle of the Hoan Kiem Lake, the one of the red bridge. Even if you don't wanna enter (2000d) it's a nice walk through the bridge to the center of the lake, under shady trees. It is a very popular place for locals, you will find there many street photographers and groups visiting the place.

This little bridge in the middle of the Hoan Kiem Lake makes a wonderful picture when it reflexes in the quiet waters of the lake. Its curved shape reminded me to some japanese bridges... It was built in 1885.

This is undoubtely the core of the city life, a general reference for meetings, hotel locations, restaurant addresses... Its name means "Lake of the Restored Sword", upon an ancient legend: In the 15th century emperor Le Loi used a magical sword to throw away Chinese invaders. It was given to him by Heaven, and a turtle took it back and restored it to the Lake.

This little tower in the middle of the Hoan Kiem lake commemorates the place where the giant golden tortoise grabbed the sword from Le Loi emperor and disappeared in the waters of the lake. It has become a landmark and icon of Hanoi.

Halong Bay cruise is a popular trip from Hanoi. There are 1, 2 or 3 days cruises and many agencies organize the group trips, so it won't be hard for you to find a place in a group. I did it with "ODC Travel" and couldn't complain... The best is to take a 2 days tour, sleeping on board at the bay. You can also sleep in a Hotel in Cat Ba, but is not so charming. The bay's waters are calm, so the boat doesn't move much while you sleep. Prices were about 26 USD for 2 days /1 night

This nice beautiful temple is an oasis in the traffic chaotic Hanoi streets. Founded in 1070, it was dedicated to Confucious and literature famous men. It housed Vietnam's 1st University in 1076. It has several buildings and patios, all of them beautiful, but I can't tell U what's inside, as I arrived late and couldn't visit it :-((

This "western style" Opera House was built in 1911. On 16th august 1945 the Viet Minh announced from the main balcony that they had taken over the city. They have classical music and ballet shows regularly. For schedules, check the Time Out on Hanoi.
