Things To Do: The Citadel

  • The Citadel is the huge (10 km. perimeter) area located at the north of the Perfume River.
You will access to it by one of the 2 bridges over the Perfume. If you pass by the southern one (Phu Xuan) you will be right in front of the "Forbidden Purple City", former Imperial Palace.
Around this complex of buildings, pagodas and palaces there are many tree lined streets with many official buildings and museums. Is not a residential area.

Things To Do: Ngo Mon Gate
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the main entrance to the Imperial Enclosure.
Here is the ticket office and the only entrance to the palaces. From here the Emperor watched the Military Parades and talked to the people...

Once you go through the tunnel, at your left you will find stairs to climb to the 1st floor. There you can see the huge gong, some nice pictures and the halls, which are correctly restored.

Things To Do: The Forbidden Purple City
  • Tip Rating:
  • Inside the Enclosure there are several highlights:

    - Thai Hoa Palace. The first pavillion U find after crossing the inner bridge. Well preserved, it was a reception hall.

    - Forbidden Purple City. The Palace itself. Almost totally destroyed during the Tet Offensive. Not much left to see...

    - The To Mieu Temple.

    - 9 Dynastic Urns. Huge copper urns.

    - Halls of the Mandarins, where they prepared for Court Ceremonies. There are temporary exhibitions now (see pic).

Things To Do: The nine dysnastic urns
  • Tip Rating:
  • These 9 2 meters high metal urns (about 2000 kgs each) were cast in 1835 to symbolise the Nguyen dinasty sovereigns.
They depict nature designs (clouds, sun, moon...) upon ancient (2.000 BC) chinese designs.

They can be found near the The To Mieu Temple, inside the Imperial Enclosure.

Things To Do: The Fine Arts Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This beautiful building is located at the right of the Imperial Enclosure, inside the Citadel.
It is not a real must in the city visit, but it is nice and interesting if you have some spare time. The building and the garden around it are outstanding. Inside there are many precious items, though the main part was lost during the War.
