Ho Chi Minh City Hotel Tips by SirRichard

In this classic hotel, built in 1901 and refurbished in 1989 took place most of the famous novel “The Quiet American” (Graham Greene), which reflects life in Saigon before the Vietnam War against USA.

I visited it to take a tea in one of the bars, but I didn’t find it as charmy as I expected. Decadent, but refurbished in a very unipersonal style, this hotel has lost its charm, U can’t imagine how it must have been in the first half of the 20th century…

This backpacker?s haven is to Saigon what Khao San Road is to Bngkok. Here you will find cheap restaurants, guesthouses and private romos, souvenir shops, travel agencies? all a tourist might need!
As I arrived in Saigon, I left my luggage in the Happy Tours Agency and walked up and down looking for a place to sep. There are hundreds of them in those 3-4 streets, U will be offered private romos at the streets too. Just visit some, compare prices and choose. The average price for a room with fan is 5 USD. Avoid the one in the 5th floor, as usually there is no elevator. The further you go from the main street (Cong Quyin), the cheapest it will be?

I found by chance this little guesthouse where they had a triple room left. As it was late in the evening they offered me to stay there for the price of a single, but with the possibility of having more guests in the other 2 beds if they happened to come later?
At the end nobody else came, so I stayed all alone there in that big room with 3 fans and ensuite toilet, in the 1st floor.
The stuff were nice. When I left the last day, they let me leave the luggage there and even take a shower in the evening before my bus left. Nice guys J
