  • ASPENDOS
    Hauptstraße 11, Berlin - Schöneberg / Tel: 784 85 70 / U7 Kleistpark / Times: Sun - Thu 12:00 - 22:00, Fri - Sat 12:00 - 23:00
My pick for the best döner in town. I suggest a Dürüm Döner, strips of lamb with the typical turkish toppings, great Scharfe Sosse (Hot Sauce) wrapped in a flat chewy homemade bread for 5,-DM. The vegetarian variant is called Sikma, Dürüm bread wrapped around a filling mass of potatoes, onions and spinach, flavored with paprika and lemon. The big attraction here is the quality of the bread. Whatever you order is pulled fresh from the oven by a man who has dough in his blood. For a change try the lentil soup (Linsensuppe) which comes with two hot breads for 5,-DM.

A piece of Australia in the middle of Berlin. The richness of Australia's multicultural mix is reflected in the diversity of the menu - try the red hot chicken curry or the New Zealand lamb chops with mint jelly. And if you're hankering for a chunk of the national symbol, Kangaroo will be served up steaming in a delicate port wine sauce. Billabong is the only restaurant in Berlin to have adopted Australia's B.Y.O. policy - if the award-winning Wakefield wines on the menu are not to your taste, you can bring your own wine from home or from the in-house wine shop.

    Café Einstein: CAFE EINSTEIN
    Kurfurstenstr....
  • Tip Rating:

  • CAFE EINSTEIN
    Kurfurstenstr. 58, 10785 Berlin - Tiergarten / Tel: 261 50 96 / U1+U2+U4+U12 Nollendorfplatz
    Times: Mon-Sun, 10am - 2am
    Also at: Unter den Linden 42, 10117 Mitte / Tel: 204 36 32 (Bus# 100, 348) Times: 9am - 1am daily.
    Prices: Milchcafe DM6.50, Frühstücke DM9-19, Hauptgerichte DM30-40.
Walking into Café Einstein on Kurfürstenstr. is like walking into Vienna. The mirrored walls, high ceilings, and red velvet banquettes all echo the grand old style of a traditional Viennese coffee house. So do the small but perfectly executed selection of cakes and the rich, mellow coffee. In summer, take a seat in the cool, quiet garden. They also have a lunch and diner menu in 'International, Austrian Style' - try such classics as Wiener Schnitzel or Austrian Pancakes (Kaiser Schmarren). The second, more crowded, less opulent Mitte location also offers outdoor seating, if you fancy a table in the middle of busy Unter den Linden.

I agree that Berlin is a strange city in many respects but an extremely loveable one! You hit the proverbial nail on the head with the 'mix of old and new'. Thanks for the tips, cheers, Colleen :)

i saw a pic of you in front of the murale 'cultuur barbaren' -- somewhere... sure it was Berlin but didn't find it here. Cafe Einstein would make me happy :-)
