Temples in the jungle

by SirRichard - last update: Sep 12, 2003

Many many many temples

Angkor Wat ar dusk
Angkor was the original goal when I planned this past travel to SE Asia. After enjoying the pages og Scott (Herzog63) about this wonderful place, I decided I had to go...
And if I was gonna go all the way there, why not see the rest of the area? So I ended up visiting Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos!!
Anyway, I guess the temples of the Angkor Complex were a real highlight of the trip, and 2 days and a half were definetly not enough, so I might come back some day.

Not only Angkor

Angkor is the generic name of o vaste complex of temples, fortresses, cities, walls...
The most famous of all these temples is the Angkor Wat (wat means temple), but there are many many other, amongst which are:
- Angkor Thom, including the Bayon...
- Ta Prohm
- Bantey Srep (45 kms away)
Most of the temples are witihin a 10 kms distance around a small (but quickly growing) town called Siem Reap, in the west side of Cambodia.

Take your time

Angkor has a lot to see. 3 days is the minimum recommended stay, though you can see the very essential in 2. Once you see Angkor Wat, the Bayon and the TaProm, the rest are a bit "more of the same stuff". Well, at least that was my impression.
You can hire a moto driver to take you around, waiting for you at the entrances, which is the cheapest and more logical way to do it from Siem Reap.
